Sadly, one of the last bastions of Leigh's manufacturing icons is now on it's final leg of production, as Quinn Radiators ceases it's manufacturing of Europes leading producers of domestic radiators.
Production will very shortly switch to a new £133 million 'state of the art' plant in Newport, Gwent. A site aquired from the Welsh Assembly Government, who once owned the land and which previously held the LG Philips building. Quinn's have extended the site from 700,00 sq ft to 1,000,000 sq ft to cope with demand, and will employ in the region of 460 'new' recruits?
Unfortunately, this move will result in the loss of 170 jobs here in Leigh, as their 90 day consultation period draws to a very sad end. I very much doubt that many of the current employee's will take up the option of their redeployment rights! Although, the chance of continuous employment will be very appealing to some, but, the task of moving 175 miles and more than 3 hours away from friends and family may put paid to that option.
Talking to a number of employee's who have shared their grievance over their pending redundancy, have spoken of how some employee's from the Leigh site have been down to Newport to help get the new plant up and running, and have reported back to their horror that many of the so-called 460 new jobs in Newport have indeed gone to the 'economic migrants' mainly from Poland! And that the new plant will not be fully operational for quite some time due to the lack of cohesion and language barrier of these migrants!
I would like you to have a look at the two conflicting stories relating to this report, here:
Hundreds of manufacturing jobs heading to Newport......

Jobs threat as firm struggles..........

If any solace can come from this sad chapter, although, a little too late: but welcomed nonetheless and that many who are faced with redundancy have pledged their support for the British National Party and understand that the British National Party are indeed the only party that will put British jobs for British people first on their political agenda!
So there you have it! Another headstone placed in the industrial graveyard in the heart of Leigh. I wonder what the future of the site will be used for after the last one to leave turns out the light?
p.s. If anyone can get in touch with our Welsh counterpart Green Arrow and see if he can get any more information on this, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks Gary.
